My husband and I have done IUI 6 times.

Our doctor wants us to now do IVF, but, we have since found out my husand has thyroid problems and a varicocele. We are not sure what to do?

TGH replies,

Dear Holly,

Unfortunately, IUI cycles tend to have a lower rate of success than we want, usually in the range of 10-20% per cycle, though it is standard-of-care to suggest 3 to 6 IUIs before moving on.

IVF with ICSI should provide a success rate that is at least 3-4x better.

But you are doing the right thing: getting yourself organized before taking this next, important step.

Thyroid control should happen quickly.

But the effects of varicocele repair can take 3-9 months....and still not make a difference.

If you really are not certain what to do, I advise a second opinion if you can get one. You are about to embark on a new approach (?surgery ?IVF ?both) and before doing so, you want to be certain that you are getting the best advice possible.
