		<description>Hi Dr. Hannam,
I have a question about infertility and hyperthyroidism. I have been trying to conceive for many years without success. I am finally being seen by a fertility specialist who has determined that my TSH level is very low (.22) and suspects hyperthyroidism. My Free T4 is 15.1 so they are not sure what is going on. I am scheduled to see an endocrinologist in 3 months. I am 41 years old and have a strong family history of hyperthyroidism (all females in my dad's family). All my other fertility tests are normal and my husband has so problems. Do you think that controlling the hyperthyroidism will allow me to become pregnant? This is the only thing that has come out abnormal and we are hoping that this might be the answer to a long standing problem.

Thanks,
Gail

Gail,

Though it is important (and relatively straighforward) to ensure good thyroid control, it is rare that the thyroid is the only impediment to fertility...this may not be "the" answer to your concerns, rather than a necessary step.

I wonder if your endocrinologist has a cancellation list? The first appointment is too far away, given that it may then take some time to allow the therapy to work. This is one of those times that you might want to be the pushy patient.
